What Is Functional Fitness And Why It's Important?
A question from LifeWithVinceLuu has led to this topic. He's an ultra runner, very smart and motivating content creator. In this video where I did a ladder workout (88 pull ups total) he asked: "Are you training for anything specific right now?" And I answered that I am focused on functional/tactical fitness at the moment but, what is that exactly? What is functional fitness/functional training?
Functional fitness/functional training
Well, to me functional training is getting your body in shape by training it in many different ways meeting key fitness components so it functions the best possible. Key fitness components are:
Strength, power, agility, balance, flexibility, local muscle endurance, cardiovascular endurance, strength endurance and coordination.
Since I have been focussing on this, my body fat got lower and I got in the best shape I have ever been in my whole life. I love the variety and the functionality of it, as it is very practical. No more excuses, because this type of training can be done anywhere without any equipment. If you commit to this and making sure your workout program has been thought out well, you can get RIPPED and in serious great shape. Look at the military! They get their soldiers in outstanding shape with almost no equipment because their workouts are designed in a way that they're making sure that all the earlier mentioned key fitness components are trained.
7 Reasons why YOU want to be focused on functional fitness/body weight workouts
1. You can do them literally anywhere
2. You don't need any equipment
3. It helps to build a strong core
4. You don't need a gym membership
5. Your body will be all rounded.
6. Functional fitness is great for weight loss.
7. It is for EVERYONE, it doesn't matter how fit you are at the moment.
Will you get big muscles like bodybuilders?
No, and that's also not the point here. Bodybuilding is useful for winning bodybuilding contests. Yes, you get stronger but bodybuilders are definitely not all rounded and lack many key fitness components. No offense to bodybuilders though. Great discipline and determination is a necessity in the bodybuilding world and God knows what more, but it's just something different from functional fitness. I respect everyone and everyone must do what they love but if you want to have some big ass muscles, functional fitness might not be for you and you can better start bodybuilding.
What are functional fitness exercises?
Well, simply said all body weight related exercises, like burpees, pull ups, squats, lunges, dips, push-ups, flutter kicks, mountain climbers, muscle ups, high knee taps, shoulder taps, running and God knows what more. Like I said, there is SO much variety here and that's one of the reasons I love it so much.
Follow me on my journey on this blog, on YouTube and on Instagram so you can experience functional fitness yourself. Allow your body to do what it's made for. I create follow along workouts where I really get out of my comfort zone and yes, I am also still growing in this, but I got a lot of plans people!
