What's One's Purpose in Life?

What’s one’s purpose in life? Does life have a purpose? These questions seem to be important for many, because many people are seeking the answer. When I think about this, I can come up with 2 ways to approach this subject:

Way 1: Life has a purpose

Way 2: Life has no purpose

Let’s start with way 1.

Life has a purpose

When someone wants to find or determine the purpose of his or her life, I think it’s important to determine the way one can spend their time most useful, in a way which gives happiness and contentment in return. Usually this has to do with providing a kind of value, which I think originates from our need to feel fulfilled. The need to live a meaningful life. It’s completely natural to feel that way. We want to feel happy and content, and when you have the sense that you have provided a positive contribution to the world or to someone’s life, it makes you feel good. Making other people feel good, helping and taking care others, random acts of kindness and more of such things.

Besides helping others I believe it’s also important not to forget about yourself either. Be kind to yourself as well. Have fun and in the meanwhile, know why you get up in the morning. What thrives you? I think when you have the need to attach a purpose to your life, you need to find some balance between giving and receiving, with a happy and content feeling in return.

And then you have way number 2 - a purposeless life.

Life has no purpose

What would happen if you let go of finding a purpose and just live? Maybe life is a purpose itself? Because, if you think about it as followed - a purpose is like a goal. Goals are there to be achieved. Things to achieve are always in the future but LIFE, is always here. It’s the very here and now, nothing else. This makes life actually unachievable, right? It makes it just like a moment, followed by another moment and by another moment. The fact that you are alive and experience these chains of moments, isn’t that enough?

Many of us are living in a world of hustling. Fighting for what we want to achieve, and that can be beautiful as well but NOT when we forget to LIVE. To live intensely and to allow yourself to FEEL! To live consciously IN THE MOMENT. In the here and now. There’s nothing more. Time does not exist and is just something defined by humans. The past is a memory (and sometimes it’s not even that..), and the future has yet to come. The only thing we have, is that moment in between. And that moment is called life. Would you be able to forgive yourself at the end of your life, if the only thing you have been doing is trying to achieve goals and forgot about life itself?

My final thoughts

So, looking at these 2 ways to approach the purpose of life - I think this is something for you to figure out. You can either attach a purpose to your life, or let go of purpose and just live. If you decide to let go of the need to attach a purpose to your life, remember that it doesn’t mean that you cannot do the things you would’ve done when you would attach one or more purposes to your life. When you experience life as the purpose itself, you can still perform random acts of kindness, make positive contributions to the world or other people’s lives and so on. The only difference is that people who don’t attach a purpose to life are not worrying about the fact that they have no purpose, or don’t know the purpose of life. It’s a matter of simplifying. I am a complex individual, but I love simplicity so you can guess which way I prefer :-) How do you think about this? Let me know in the comment section!
